Backwater Valve
One-way valve installed in a drain line to prevent sewage from flowing backward into a building during main line blockage or surcharge.
A backwater valve is a check valve mounted in the building drain or sump line, typically in the basement or crawlspace, that allows waste to flow out toward the municipal sewer or septic system but seals shut if pressure reverses. When the main sanitary line backs up—whether from a blockage downstream, heavy rain in a combined system, or high groundwater—the backwater valve closes and forces sewage to stop at that point instead of backing up into fixtures or creating a basement flood.
These come as swing-flapper models (simplest, relies on gravity and pressure differential) or ball-check designs (more reliable in difficult conditions). Installation location matters: the valve must be accessible for cleaning, and many codes require a cleanout immediately upstream so you can rod out blockages without dismantling the valve itself. Some jurisdictions mandate them for any basement fixture or wet location below the sewer main elevation.
In the field, backwater valves are insurance against the worst. They don't prevent the clog that causes the backup—you still have to locate and clear it—but they keep sewage out of the building. They do require maintenance; debris can stick the flapper, so they need to be inspected and cleaned periodically, and they'll eventually fail. When they do, they fail closed, which means the entire building's waste has nowhere to go. That's why accessibility is critical.
