DWV
Also known as Drain-waste-vent
The system of pipes that removes wastewater and sewer gases from fixtures, vents them safely to atmosphere, and prevents siphoning.
The drain-waste-vent system includes all piping downstream of the trap arm—drains that carry used water and waste, waste lines that converge into stacks, and vent lines that allow air into the system and exhaust sewer gases through the roof. Without proper venting, traps lose their seals, fixtures drain slowly or not at all, and foul air backs up into the building. Code requires every trap to have a vent within a specified distance, sized according to the load and length of run, with no wet venting or improper connections that would compromise drainage or trap performance.
Field practice means sizing DWV carefully—undersized drains and vents are a common failure point, especially on second-floor bathrooms or islands where vent routing gets creative. Stack sizing, trap arm slope, cleanout access, and vent termination all matter. A properly designed DWV system drains freely under gravity, maintains trap seals, allows fixtures to refill traps quickly, and vents all gas to atmosphere, not into walls or attics.
