Gas Control Valve
Solenoid or manual valve that regulates gas flow to a water heater, furnace, or appliance, cutting supply when ignition fails or thermostat signal stops.
A gas control valve sits between the gas supply line and the burner assembly. It holds back pressure until an ignition source (pilot light or electronic spark) is confirmed and the thermostat calls for heat. Once the pilot or ignition proves safe, the valve opens to let gas flow to the main burner.
These valves are almost always solenoid-operated on modern equipment—the thermostat sends a low-voltage signal that energizes a coil, which then lifts an internal plunger to open the gas port. Some older units or manual standby systems use a simple hand lever. The valve also includes a safety shutoff: if the pilot light blows out or the ignition circuit fails, the solenoid de-energizes and a spring snaps the valve closed, stopping gas flow immediately.
On a service call, if an appliance won't light or keeps shutting down after a few minutes, the gas control valve is often the culprit. Test the incoming voltage at the solenoid coil terminals with a multimeter; no voltage usually means a bad thermostat or control board, while voltage present but the valve still won't open points to a stuck plunger or failed coil. Some valves are field-serviceable (coil replacement), but most are replaced as a unit. Always verify the gas shutoff works before cracking open the line.
