Heat Pump Water Heater
Also known as HPWH
Electric water heater that moves heat from surrounding air into the tank instead of generating heat directly.
A heat pump water heater (HPWH) uses refrigerant and a compressor to extract thermal energy from the surrounding air and transfer it into the water tank. The system operates like a refrigerator in reverse—it pulls heat from the space around it (even cold air contains usable heat) and concentrates that energy to warm water. Most HPWHs are hybrid units that switch to electric resistance heating when demand spikes or air temperature drops below their effective operating range, typically around 50°F.
In the field, HPWHs cost more upfront than conventional electric or gas units but use significantly less energy to operate—often 50% less than traditional electric resistance heaters. Installation requires adequate air space around the unit (usually 1,000 cubic feet minimum) since the system pulls air across the evaporator coil, and you'll need to manage condensate drainage like an AC unit. They're noisier than standard heaters and run slower during recovery, which matters when sizing for households with high hot-water demand.
HPWHs make sense for new construction, retrofits in moderate climates, and customers focused on long-term energy savings. Cold climates, tight mechanical spaces, and rapid recovery requirements can make them problematic. Always verify the manufacturer's minimum air temperature rating and confirm the home's electrical service can handle the compressor and backup heating elements.
