Mixing Valve

Also known as Thermostatic mixing valve, TMV

A valve that blends hot and cold water to deliver a preset, stable outlet temperature regardless of inlet pressure or temperature swings.

A mixing valve combines hot and cold supply lines and regulates their proportions to hold a set discharge temperature. The most common type in residential work is the thermostatic mixing valve (TMV), which uses a wax-filled cartridge or bimetallic element that expands and contracts with temperature, automatically adjusting the hot-water port opening to maintain the outlet setpoint. This matters because it prevents scalding—especially critical at showers and wash stations—and keeps cold water pressure surges from suddenly spiking hot water temperature.

In the field, mixing valves are installed either at the point of use (under a sink or behind a shower valve) or as a master unit on the main hot-water line, depending on code and application. They're not shut-off valves; they're flow-through regulators. If the hot supply drops in pressure or temperature, the cartridge shifts and opens wider to pull more hot water; if cold pressure spikes, it closes to protect the outlet. Building codes in many jurisdictions now require TMVs on all shower outlets and sometimes on any fixture that could deliver water hotter than 110–120°F to a bather.

Temperature drift happens on every job—incoming water varies, fixtures wear, supply pressure fluctuates. A mixing valve absorbs all that noise so the occupant gets consistent temperature at the tap. Test one by running hot water, then cracking a cold line and watching the outlet temp hold steady. If it swings wild, the cartridge is shot and needs replacement.
