Root Intrusion
Tree or plant roots penetrating and blocking the interior of underground sewer or drain lines.
Root intrusion happens when tree and shrub roots seek out moisture and nutrients in buried sewer, storm, or septic drain lines. They enter through existing cracks, joints, or small separations in the pipe, then grow inside the line and create blockages that collect grease, hair, solids, and toilet paper. Over time, the root mass thickens and can collapse or severely restrict the pipe.
In the field, you'll typically discover root intrusion during a camera inspection—you'll see hair-like or stringy root material filling the pipe lumen, often clustered around pipe joints or areas of damage. Some jobs respond to mechanical cleaning with a root cutter, but if roots have penetrated deep or the pipe is already compromised, mechanical removal is temporary; the roots come back. Chemical root control products can slow regrowth between cleanings, but they don't kill the problem permanently.
Root intrusion is a chronic issue in older clay or PVC lines and in properties with large trees or aggressive root systems nearby. Once it's present, the only lasting fix is line replacement or relining, because the pipe damage that allowed entry in the first place remains. Prevention means keeping trees and ornamentals away from sewer and drain runs, and catching pipe damage early before roots colonize it.
